What a Ceramic Coating Actually Is

A ceramic coating is a liquid glass layer that bonds to your clear coat and cures hard. It isn’t wax sitting on top waiting to wash away — it becomes part of the surface and stays there for years. What you notice day to day is the shine holding up, water sheeting off instead of drying into spots, and the car getting easier to clean rather than harder. What you don’t see is the paint underneath being shielded from sun, road film, and brake dust the whole time. I prep the paint until it’s flawless first, then lock that finish in.

The Road to a Perfect Coating

Most of a coating job isn’t the coating. It’s everything that happens before it, because once the coating cures, whatever is under it is what you live with.

Stage 1Inspection & Deep WashPaint thickness gauge across every panel and an honest read on what the paint needs. Then a full three-bucket hand wash — wheels, arches, paint — so nothing loose is left on the surface.Paint depth measured on every panel, then a full three-bucket hand wash.
Stage 2DecontaminationIron fallout remover to dissolve embedded brake dust, then a clay bar to pull out whatever is still bonded to the paint. A coating grabs the surface it is given, so the surface has to be bare.Iron remover and a clay bar until the paint is bare — a coating grabs whatever surface it is given.
Stage 3Paint CorrectionMachine polishing to remove the swirls and haze before anything goes over them. This is the step that decides how the car looks for the next several years — a coating seals in whatever is underneath it, good or bad.Machine polishing to remove swirls and haze. Stage 4The Coating Goes DownA panel wipe strips every trace of polishing oil, then the coating is laid down by hand, panel by panel, in controlled sections. What a Ceramic Coating Actually Does

Coatings get sold with a lot of adjectives. Here is the actual work, drawn as a cross-section of your paint — including why the prep takes most of the day.

Paint Correction Before the Coating

Every coating I install includes machine correction first. It isn’t an upsell and it isn’t optional — a coating locks in the surface it bonds to, so the swirls have to come out before anything goes over them.

Machine correction is included, not an upsell. A coating locks in whatever is under it, so the swirls come out first.

  • Paint depth measured before a pad touches the car
  • Test spot to find the least aggressive combination that works
  • Swirls, wash marks, haze and oxidation polished out
  • Panel wipe to strip every trace of polishing oil so the coating can bond

Why It Matters

Stop Sun Fade Before It’s Permanent

Southern California sun is the reason clear coat goes chalky and red paint turns pink. A coating takes that UV load instead of your paint. Once the clear coat is gone, no polish brings it back — it’s a respray.

Water Slides Right Off

The surface is too slick for water to spread across, so it pulls into beads and runs off the panel. Fewer water spots, faster drying, and rain does some of the cleaning for you.

Nothing Sticks Like It Used To

Bug splatter, bird droppings, road film and brake dust sit on top of the coating instead of soaking into the paint. A wash that used to take two hours takes forty minutes.

Gloss That Holds Its Value

Corrected paint that stays corrected is the difference between a car that looks its age and one that doesn’t. Every service I perform is reported to CarFax, so the work shows up on the history report.

Pick Your Protection

Three coatings, three lengths of protection. The prep, the correction and the care are the same in all three — what changes is how long the finish holds.

Thicker film, harder cure, noticeably more chemical resistance than CanCoat. This is the one most people land on — it outlives the correction underneath it and it is still a sane number.

The longest protection I install, and the one with the most durable finish. Worth it on a car you plan to keep, in a colour that shows everything, or one that lives outside.

The longest protection and the most durable finish I install. For a car you are keeping.

Vehicle size and paint condition move the number. A well-kept sedan sits at the start of each range; a large SUV or heavily swirled paint that needs multi-stage correction runs higher — up to about $895, $1,125 and $1,525 respectively, and that is also the only situation that pushes the job into a second day. I quote the exact figure after an inspection, so you are never paying for correction stages your paint does not need.

The Three Coatings, Side by Side

Why We’re Different

Confident enough to put it in writing

A Written Warranty I Personally Honor

Not a manufacturer form you file with a call centre. You get a written warranty from me, with an inspection schedule, and I am the one who shows up if something is wrong.

The Studio Comes to You

A fully equipped detailing van with our own water and power. Multi-day coating jobs happen in your driveway.

Your Written Warranty

Fully insured. Professional liability coverage on every job, every vehicle.

Coverage in writing. Gloss retention, hydrophobic performance and coating failure are covered for the rated life of the coating you choose, provided the car is washed properly and brought in for its scheduled inspections.

Care instructions you can actually follow. Hand wash with a pH-neutral soap, no automatic washes with brushes, no wax or filler products on top. That’s most of it.

Inspections on a schedule. Annual for the one and three year coatings, and every 18 months for Crystal Serum Light — so a problem gets caught while it is still small.

If it fails, I fix it. One call, and I come back out. Real person, real reply — expect to hear from me within 6 hours.

Jaycen was amazing — very polite, professional, and knowledgeable. My brand new Tesla Model 3 is looking gorgeous after a five-year ceramic coating done by him. I will recommend this young man 100%. Very, very high work ethic.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my car needs a ceramic coating?

If you are washing it more often and it looks worse anyway, that is the sign. Bare clear coat is porous — road film and brake dust work into it, water dries into spots, and the shine flattens out. A coating seals that surface so dirt sits on top of it instead of in it.

Do I need paint correction first, or can you just coat it?

Correction comes first, and it is included. A coating locks in whatever is underneath it, so coating over swirls means preserving those swirls for the life of the coating. If your paint is already near-perfect the correction stage is short — that is a conversation at the inspection, not a surprise on the invoice.

How long does the whole job take?

One day for almost every car, whichever coating you pick — I arrive in the morning and the car is done that evening. The exception is a larger vehicle, or paint that needs multi-stage correction before the coating goes on; those run into a second day, and I tell you which yours is at the inspection rather than on the day.

What does it actually cost?

$775 for the one-year Gyeon CanCoat, $975 for the three-year Pure2, and $1,325 for the five-year Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light. Vehicle size and paint condition move it up from there — a large SUV with heavily swirled paint runs toward the top of each range. I quote the exact number after an inspection.

Can I still take it through a car wash?

Not an automatic one with brushes — those are what put the swirls in to begin with, and they will dull a coating the same way. Touchless is fine, hand washing with a pH-neutral soap is better. I give you the care sheet and it is short.

Will it stop rock chips and scratches?

No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. A coating is one to two microns of glass — it resists chemical etching, UV and staining, and it makes light contact less likely to mark the paint. It will not stop a rock at freeway speed. That is what paint protection film is for.

How long does it really last?

As long as it is rated for, if it is washed properly and inspected on schedule. Coatings do not fall off — they wear thin, and the beading goes first. That is why the inspections exist: I can see it going before you can.

Do you come to me?

Yes. Fully mobile across Los Angeles and Orange County, with our own water and power in the van. I need a flat spot and access to the car overnight, and that is it.
