Why are the wheels dirty again by Wednesday?
You come off the 605 at Firestone, park at Stonewood or outside Porto’s, and the wheels already carry that grey-brown film. Wash them on Sunday and by midweek they look like you never touched them.
Brake dust is not really dust. It is hot metal coming off the pads, and Downey sits inside three freeways, so there is plenty of it. It lands on the wheels and the lower panels and it bonds while it is still warm.
Soap will not lift it. Those particles key into the clear coat and into the wheel finish, and once they are in they begin to rust in place. That is the orange speckling you see on white cars around here.
So we pull it out chemically first. An iron remover dissolves what is embedded before anything mechanical touches the paint, a clay pass takes the rest, and then a sealant or coating keeps the next round sitting on top where it belongs.

Downey cars come to me with wheels and lower panels that have taken a beating from the freeways. I would rather explain what is actually happening to your paint than sell you a package you do not need.
I am insured and happy to show the certificate. At the end we walk the car together and you tell me if anything is off before I load up.

A coating is the service that pays for itself fastest on a commuter car. Brake dust lands on the coating instead of the clear coat, so it comes off with a rinse. If the wheels and lower panels already show rust speckling, decontamination comes first.

What do most people here book?
The full detail, from $150. On a car that lives on the freeway the wheels and lower panels usually need decontaminating before anything else is worth doing.
Why do the wheels look dirty two days after a wash?
Brake dust. It is metal, it is hot when it lands, and it bonds on contact. A normal wash moves the loose layer and leaves the rest exactly where it was.
What are the little orange specks on my white car?
Embedded iron starting to rust inside the clear coat. It comes out chemically with an iron remover and a clay pass, and that is part of the full detail rather than an extra.
Will a ceramic coating help with brake dust?
Yes. It stops the particles keying into the paint, so most of it rinses off instead of bonding. Coatings start at $800 and include correction first.
Can you work at an apartment building?
Yes, we do most weeks. A space at the curb or in the lot is enough, because the van brings its own water and power.
Can you do it while I am at work?
Yes, and most people do it that way. Leave the keys, we text you when it is done, and we walk the car together if you are back in time.
How long does it take?
An exterior detail is about an hour. A full detail is longer and a ceramic coating is a full day. We confirm the exact window when you book.
